Confessions about my OCD

If you have followed my blog for any time at all I am sure 
you have come to realized that I truly am diagnosed OCD.  
I have struggled with obsessive compulsions for years but have only recently 
been officially diagnosed. I could chose to be bitter or angry about this speed bump in my life, 
but I choose to laugh at myself and have fun with it! Understand though that
 OCD is a real disorder and it can be frustrating for whomever might suffer from this disorder, 
and please be patient with those of us who do.

With saying all of this, I thought I would share 
some of my odd and strange obsessions.

1) Not stepping on cracks is not just for children...I cannot bring myself to do it either!
In fact, at my job we have carpet squares and I catch myself not stepping on the seams.

2) I count everything {steps, people, cars, billboards, window panes....}

3) I color code my planner. Seriously!
Oh, and my closet.

4) I have to double check and triple check most things I do.

5) My mind is constantly running and thinking.
I actually have missed hearing what people are saying because my brain will not chill out.

6) I cannot sit down and work at a dirty desk.

7) I can never use too much lysol or bleach!

8) I have a difficult time sleeping because my obsessive thinking.

9) You can move anything and I will notice!

10) Some say my creativity and OCD are linked.

11) I continually tap my leg/foot.

12) I clean my dish gloves and vacuum.

13) I notice way too many details!

14) I avoid at all costs shaking someone's hand or hugging.
Lately, I have been better at allowing hugs from my family.

15) I click the lock button three times on my car before getting out.

16) My skin crawls if someone coughs near me.

17) Everything I do has to be an equal or an even number.

18) I get super frustrated if the price of gas does not come out even.

19) Sometimes I think I am beyond a compulsion then I end up doing it 10 times worse.

20) My co-workers use my OCD against me. It is funny though.

21) OCD meds are massively frustrating. They are suppose to help your symptoms
however it actually makes you super thirsty and makes your brain foggy.

22) When putting things in alphabetical order I have to go through the entire alphabet.

23) I CANNOT stand for my food to touch on my plate.
I even eat veggie soup one type of veggie at a time.

24) I try extremely hard not to use public restrooms, but when I have to
I carry wipes in my purse.

25) I will look away to avoid triggering an obsession.

26) Stacks of paper can never be straight enough.

28) I do yoga to practice relaxing.

29) I have a very rigid morning routine.

30) I have so many more but I really wanted to stop at number 30.

  3. Thank you for sharing. I have known people with OCD but they have tried to hide their obsessions. I think that being open and honest is truly a gift and one that will let you be your true authentic self.
    Your blog is beautiful and you have so many people that love your writing and creativity. So many wonderful accomplishments!

    1. Honestly, if I could not laugh at my condition I am not sure how I would deal with it...I am sure you understand! Plus, it is helpful knowing there are others like me out there!

  5. Hi, I'm a new follower to your blog, it's like I'm reading about myself. I make jokes about my "craziness" but seriously it can be so so sooooo frustrating. My worse thing is washing my hands like ten million times a day and getting really scared that I didn't turn something off, unplug something or lock something properly. It's nice to know I'm not alone. :) - Sam

    1. I totally understand, it can be incredibly frustrating! I am right there with you about washing my hands too much and wondering what I might have forgot to turn off or unplug! You are not alone at all!

    2. A while back I started taking pictures on my phone of everything unplugged so I could reassure myself when we were going anywhere, "did I plug the iron?" "Oh yeah I have a picture of it unplugged and put away!" But then I started getting freaked out, like for a second I'd go "ahhhh wait is that an old photo?!" LOL

  6. I was diagnosed with it this year, but then another doctor thought something different. Anyway, I just found out I have a Vit D deficiency and have been taking big doses and finding it helping as much or more than my crazy meds :).

    Not glad you go through this, but glad to find someone who understands. I wrote some about it here:


    1. Wow, maybe I will start taking Vit D and see if it helps at all. It would be worth a shot and it couldn't hurt! I absolutely loved the last paragraph of your post because that is exactly how I felt and still feel. Everytime I go to the doctor I realized not everyone worries as much as I do, and that there are ways to let go of that worry!

  7. I was diagnosed with OCD back in 2006.... so... welcome to the club? lol I've gotten a lot of my compulsions under control, but there are still quite a few that persist even with medication. I'd like to think Im just a worrier, but I know my OCD plays into it.

  8. I do so many of these!
    Especially the veggie soup thing! I don't like textures to mix together so casseroles are completely out! And soup has to be something I can eat one thing at a time, like veggie soup is.

    1. haha I am so happy I am not the only one who separates their veggie soup! I definitely hate casseroles too...I think there are too many mixed textures too!

  10. ((BRITT)) Thank you for your honesty!!! Actually reading this took me back ... at one point I was engaged to marry a guy w/ OCD - so reading this list was like seeing old clips (not a bad thing! he really was a great guy - the one I shouldn't have let get away!).. when I used to empty my ashtray in his kitchen garbage, I had to tell him ... and even tho I made well sure they were old cigarette butts that were well 'dead', he had to dump half a gallon of water - and only spring water - in the garbage after me. Which made a tremendous mess/flood so I said, "Hey ... let me just take my cigarettes with me! After all, you don't smoke anymore!" Instead, he went to the gym three nights a week, and rode his bicycle every Saturday there wasn't rain or snow - yeah, I know you get what I'm saying ...

    1. Oh my, I can totally understand! I use matches to light candles and I have to run them under water until it is completely soaked before throwing it away. It is so hard to let things like that go. I have a lot of respect for you for understanding his compulsions...it is a difficult thing for people to understand and respect.
